We adopted our dog from Puppy Hill in 2007. Her name was Ona, but we had just come back from our honeymoon and wanted something more tropical -- so we changed it to Kona.
When we had to go back to work, we left Kona in her crate for the morning and I came home at lunch to check on her! To my surprise, she was waiting for me as soon as I walked in -- not in her crate. Somewhat shocked to see this, I walked around looking at the evidence of how she had entertained herself all morning. Some shoes had migrated out of the closet, particularly all of the fuzzy boots. An eyeglass case and an mp3 player had seen better days. I thought I must have forgotten to latch the crate, so when I got ready to go back to work after lunch, I put her back inside and made sure to close the latches. Her crate was in the bedroom, and I also closed the bedroom door. Before I went back to work, I cleaned up the kitchen a little and then went to say goodbye to Kona before I left. Of course, she was sitting and grinning just inside the bedroom door -- out of the crate again! At that point, I knew we had a true escape artist on our hands.

Since then, Kona has used her talents to teach other dogs at her day care (the Doggie Spot) to open the latched gates between their pens, so that they can all play together. She also likes to use the water fountain when she gets thirsty. We are very happy to have this supersmart family member who truly sees the world as her playground.
